The Real McCoy rum is based on the story of Captain Bill McCoy, an alcohol bootlegger during the times of prohibition. Around 1920, Captain Bill McCoy began smuggling rum from the Caribbean to New York. In doing so, he was fastidious about staying in international waters – back then this meant 3 miles from the coast. Bill McCoy made his name or rather, his brand, by not diluting the rum like everyone else, as this was common practice and usually done with water in the best case scenario, or with the help of chemicals such as turpentine. And thus, he became highly popular as “The Real McCoy.”
In memory of Bill McCoy, his tradition is carried on. The rum contains no additives like sugar, flavorings or perfume. The distillation process is a combination of column and pot still. It is then matured in former bourbon barrels anywhere between 3-12 years.
Behind all this lies the incredible effort of master distiller R. L. Seal from the Foursquare Distillery.
R. L. Seal is a 4th generation distiller who is renowned worldwide for his outstanding work. He is not one for dishonest products. His creations signify honest artisanal work and are not sugared or perfumed. Furthermore, his age information on the products always indicates the actual age, which means they are never blended with younger rum.
